Underwater Housing for Nikon 1 AW1

The official support message: There is no underwater housing for Nikon 1 AW1 from Nikon itself. The housing for the Nikon 1 J models will not fit.
The bad news: There is also no underwater housing available on the market.

The next work will show you an opportunity if you want to go deeper than 15m or stay longer in the water than 2 hours. This solution costs around 120€ but the camera functions are limited.
Most of the underwater pictures showing not natural colors or they have the wrong focus. While you move with the waves the photo target moves as well. Very often you do not have the time for a second shot.

My suggestion:
  • Use the series picture function.
  • Do not zoom.
  • Make your setup before.
  • Delete your photos after your trip.

The series picture function allows you to make up to 60 pictures per second. There will be at least one good shot.

What you need:
  • On / off
  • Make Pictures
  • Make Videos
If you can live with that kind of limitations you can modify one underwater case to fit your AW1.
This requires some handcraft skills.
Tools I used: Screw driver, file, heat gun, small sized flex, little drills, measuring stick
Buy a Polaroid Waterproof Case for Nikon V1 10-30mm.
Disassemble the case. As you can see it almost fits. Due to the diameter of the lens you cannot press the camera too far to the front of the case. It would be nice because then the main buttons will work. In addition you have to consider the pressure at 40m which may lead to minimal deformation of the case.
To work with the case disassemble all buttons. You must also shorten the little rods you do not need.
With some very little modifications inside the case the camera will fit into the case. I did took some material away close to the flashlight and on the left side.
To keep the camera in position, which is essential for the buttons, I created some little L-Shaped pieces out of polycarbonate. It's not an easy task to measure them - I used some Styrofoam pieces as measurement pieces.
With these L-Shaped pieces you can push back the camera to have some little space between the camera lens and the case.
The rubber piece on the backside must be decreased by ca. 3mm - depending how far you pushed the camera back with your L-Shapes.
If you can close the case the major buttons will not fit anymore if you push the camera to the back side. They need to be created again. I used polycarbonate and heated the pieces up for the forming process.
Some of these little button-rods must be shortened. They will not fit anyway. I tried get the coordination cross work again but due to the push back there is no space left. It's a decision you have to make: try to get the cross working and risk a lens damage when if the case deformates only 0.5mm at 40m depth or be on the save side.
If everything fits reassemble the case and care for the seals.
On the front size you will need to cut rubber piece but take care of the seal!
At the end there are some pieces left over - may be you can help others with them.
Please do not forget to make a long term pressure.
